What do Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Rob Thielke have in common?


Bill Gates once famously said: “If I had one dollar left, I’d spend it on PR”. Google Bill Gates and you will see a Master of PR. Donald Trump has successfully marketed himself as a celebrity tycoon and now the most grandiose politician of our time. Whatever he says, does, doesn’t say or doesn’t do, is on every one’s mind, every day all over the world. Google Donald Trump and you will see a Master of PR. Rob Thielke, who died this week, was the marketing genius who wrote and starred in commercials, which were parodies of movies and TV shows for Vern Fonk Insurance, a Seattle based company with seventeen offices throughout the Nortwest. It was Thielke’s unique, creative antics that catapulted an ordinary insurance company into a household name. Google Rob Thielke and you will see a Master of PR.

This world is one big marketplace. Perhaps once in a generation, a person’s name becomes a brand, in and of itself. Certainly, this is true of Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Donald Trump and Vern Fonk’s Rob Thielke.

If we want our services, products, companies taken seriously, it is a psychological, spiritual and intellectual process. We have to re-train our minds and allow new information to seed. This requires studying how the best of the best present themselves and how they market their brand. Once you begin to strip away all the old thoughts that don’t serve you anymore, you will be amazed at how quickly your own empowered-self will manifest. Start writing from one part of yourself to the other. This exercise is in my new book, “Hello, Beautiful-How the Power of Self Love Heals & Transforms You Forever.” Of all the exercises I did, this was the most profound.

Visionaries don’t ask their web developer or assistant to create their content. Yes, we need professionals in their respective fields to grow our content in order to better engage our audiences, but before we can do that, we need to be crystal clear as to who we really are, what we truly want and how what we are offering is extraordinary. A short story comes to mind. I was coaching a real estate agent who is an avid Yoga & Meditation student and practitioner. This part of herself is as important to her as the air she breathes, yet her business cards looked like everyone else’s. I suggested she take a picture of herself sitting in a lotus position, with her laptop in her lap, so she would attract clients who were in alignment with her whole person. She has gone on to become one of the most successful real estate specialists in her area.

I have been a life coach and consultant for nine years, and as a Realtor with real estate professionals as a large part of my coaching practice, I focus on the power of authenticity. When we are able to express “our inner content,” that differentiates us from the plethora of competition; we have a much better shot at attaining success. This is why I love inbound marketing techniques as the way to promote, market and brand yourself. Outbound marketing focuses on buying ads, buying followers and hoping these efforts turn into leads. Inbound marketing focuses on creating quality content that pulls people toward you, your company and product. Focus on your users, not your search engines. “Know thy User,” is the fundamental principle beneath inbound marketing. Inbound marketing is transformative. Body, Mind and Spirit.

One of my fondest memories was being asked to be on UCLA’s Entrepreneurial Panel. It was the early 80’s and computers were a rare commodity. The only person I knew that was an ardent enthusiast was my son, Kevin who, at 15 years old started his own computer business, teaching other kids and their parents how to use them. I couldn’t imagine using them for networking with people, personally or professionally. When it was my turn to speak, I talked about the importance in building solid, lasting relationships with your clients or customers who look forward to connecting with you. Align yourself with the vibration of energy you receive by being with kindred spirits. To monetize what you are “serving,” it is absolutely essential to create a flow of repeat customers, and clients and their referrals. The Universe will conspire with you to surround yourself with people who want you to thrive, teachers who are devoted to your well-being and clients and customers who want what you are selling, because they want to work with YOU!

Gates wrote an article titled “Content is King” in 1996. Today, content really is king. It should be the foundation of your marketing strategy. Everything else is icing on the cake.
